Petra

A two-storey facade carved straight out of a cliff, with two tiny people at its door.

A doorway, columns and pediments, all cut straight out of the cliff above a floor of flat sand. The second photo turns the stone orange, with figures standing in the niches between the columns. After that come a doorway with grass sprouting from the cracks, a small porch on two columns, and a cliff dotted with dark openings.

Petra is in Wadi Musa, in Jordan's Ma'an Governorate. This is desert land, and what you see here are ruins and historic sites. Spring and autumn are the seasons to aim for. It draws plenty of tourists, and the visit is an energetic one.
